This is my second year at the conference. I had been hearing a lot about the new W launched this Summer in DC so this past weekend I decided to head downtown and check it out with a group of friends.  In general, I’m a big fan of Starwood Hotels so had high expectations walking in, tempered slightly by some of the stories I had heard from friends who had trouble getting in.  Thankfully, we didn’t have any issues at the door and I was more than impressed with the overall experience of the venue.

I love looking at articles showing elaborate spreads that take days and days to make from scratch, but in reality those recipes just end up in my recycling bin. However. Anyone familiar with traditional Spanish tapas can attest to the fact that the phrase “vegan tapas” is almost an oxymoron. Which means, of course, that tapas are exactly what CH was in the mood for on his b-day a few weeks ago! (Not vegan tapas, per se , but I digress…) As a result, when I decided to make him a delicious spread of vegan tapas for dinner, I felt like I was grasping at straws. Before I was old enough to drink, I went with friends for the cheese grits and the atmosphere. Two weeks ago we mentioned that a new California French restaurant was opening in the new oddly Tudor building that snaked behind Beach City Smoothies on the corner of Roosevelt and Carlsbad Village Drive in the Village of Carlsbadistan . In that post the restaurant was called Per Se . But that was then. The wine bar (which is currently open) and the restaurant (which is reportedly opening soon) is now called Paon , according to restaurant’s website .

On my trip to California last weekend, the main event was a day at the races. Specifically, the Del Mar horse races. We had a table reserved for lunch and drinks up at the Turf Club. Sounds fancy, huh? Yep, there was a stinking dress code. But the food was fabulous and the drinks were flowing nonstop. Vodka sodas with lemon taste divine when you’re feeling the warm breeze off the California coast. My memories of a day at the races when I lived in Del Mar 15 years ago involved tank tops, shorts, and beers out in the hot sun.

This trip to California is winding down, we are packing to leave. Instead of thinking about returning to my cage tomorrow, I am focusing on the amazing memories this journey has provided. There are so many things that I will remember for all of my days, but one thing stands out overwhelmingly to me above everything else.I am not easily starstruck. In a previous life I was a union stagehand and either met or occupied the same general space as some of the world’s biggest rock stars and actors.

Should wine lot numbers appear on the labels of American wines as they do in Europe? The recent saga of Sierra Carche exposed some cracks in the process of wine making, wine reviewing, and wine buying. For those who haven’t checked out the saga (see Felix Salmon’s excellent summary over on Reuters.com ), an influential critic gave a wine brand called Sierra Carche the score of 96, retailers sold the wine touting that score, but many consumers then found the wine undrinkable (as the critic also did 10 months later).

On the Greek Island of Zakynthos (Zante), I was intrigued to find that there are some serious wine makers, who are producing excellent quality wines. At the Oenopoli winery , I met Timotheos and Christina-Maria, a young couple who have started a boutique winery, mixing local grapes with mainstream varieties to produce extremely drinkable and fresh wines. Timotheos told me how his family had bought the estate in the 1960s when the wealthy families on Zakynthos were hit by the shortage of labour after the terrible earthquake of 1953, when so many Zakynthian families migrated abroad in search of a better life.

I just returned from a fascinating wine tasting held at the New York Wine and Culinary Center (in Canandaigua, NY). It was an all cabernet franc tasting—21 different cab francs, 17 from the Finger Lakes (all from the 2007 vintage), three from the Loire region of France, and one from Long Island. Cabernet franc is one of the most interesting and under-appreciated wine grapes, IMHO . The most famous cab franc-based wine in the world is Cheval Blanc (two-thirds cab franc, one-third merlot) from St.

Strictly speaking Barton Estate shouldn’t be in the A2Z because it isn’t open to the public – I was thrown by a couple of web entries that suggested you could arrange tastings by appointment. Unfortunately, tastings aren’t offered but you can order the wines via the website (a word of warning, at the time of writing the wine list on the web is from 2005 but apparently the site is soon to be upgraded).
