QPF Spotlight #11 – Santo Cazzatigrahamnunn.wordpress.com
07/28/2009
Santo Cazzati hit Brisbane last month for two gigs and left behind a trail of whirling words and smiling faces. Both gigs left people wanting more and lucky for us, Santo will be heading back in August to give us all another blast of his unique spoken word style. I asked Santo to tell me about where his poems begin, the importance of the the spoken word, song lyrics and the words he lives by. Here’s what he had to say …     How does a poem begin for you – an idea, an image, a phrase?   Absolutely never an image or a phrase.

A phrase I hear a lot in Rome from tourists is, “how come you never see fat Italians?” So how is it that Italians can stay so thin when all they eat is pasta and pizza? The story, and the 10 restaurants we featured, after the jump. Buying property in Italy is a commonly discussed subject among the European investors, who rightly have substantial reasons to consider the location for overseas property investment purposes. Italy is a traditionally unique flavour, carefully preserved in a modernized shell. The land on one hand offers unmatched simplicity and the colours of culture and at the same time presents the crispest shades of development and definite growth.

Plans to increase productivitygustoso.wordpress.com
07/28/2009
I’m determined to increase our yields in the second half of this year and hopefully make colossal leaps closer to our goal of being self sufficient. The most obvious answer to producing more fruit and vegetables is to grow more plants and concentrate on prolific plants . At the moment we have four vegetable beds and about 20 dwarf fruit trees in pots. We also have several passionfruit vines and a choko. These are mostly all within hosing distance from our water tank.

Monday, July 27, 2009 That’s right, Kimm and I have been together for SEVEN years.  Wow!  Where does the time go?  I still remember when I first met her at our old place of employment. Unfortunately I slept for a good portion of the day because I had worked last night.  But I got up at 3 pm and then we started our special day.

Brie does not make a regular appearance on our grocery list. In fact, it’s usually only a yearly item at Christmastime when I like to make baked brie as an appetizer. But I do love brie. So when we were leaving Chicago this weekend and my mom asked me to take some leftover brie she had in her refrigerator, I was not about to turn her down. The only problem was, now that I had accepted this brie, I had to think of what to do with it besides just eat it on some crackers, although that would have been perfectly acceptable in my book.

In honor of this past weekend’s ComicCon in San Diego, I figured I’d make a list of places that I’d like to go or events I’d like to attend sometime before I die. Yes, I’m sure there are more than 9 places or events that I’d like to be at if I really thought about it, but this is somewhat from the hip. And brevity is always appreciated. Why not the normal list of 10? I just had to be different. 1. ComicCon in San Diego , and to a lesser extent, DragonCon in Atlanta.

Outside the Ferry Building on Thursday afternoon the crowds were gathering around the street food booths, but the airy counter at Cane Rosso was surprisingly quiet. I myself was there to check out the Laiola tacos and Namu okonomiyaki on offer outside. But I had to make a stop for a carton of bacon caramel corn. Cane Rosso is the brainchild of Coi genius Daniel Patterson and Lauren Kiino, formerly of Delfina. The menu is simple, Italian, and different every day.

Did I say I was doing these burger posts beginning July 4th? My, how time flies! Well, it might take me until next summer, but I’ll get the rest of these alternative burgers up. I’M BUSY. In fact, the dedicated reader will spot the backdrop in this next picture: the kitchen I moved out of in January of 2008. But I remember how good these burgers were! This ground lamb burger is based on a recipe I have printed in Bob Sloan’s wonderful book, “Great Burgers.” I based it on his “Lamb and Feta Burger with Cumin-Yogurt Dressing.” I’d reprint it here for you, but A) I’m not sure I have permission to do that, and B) I didn’t really follow it closely anyway.

I went to visit my very good friend yesterday, Tanni lives about two hours drive away from here so it is always a bit of an effort to get together. We got the tears out of the way first off and Tanni was as sad as I, when I told her that Amy thought that Mum hadn’t died . Even now the thought of  Amy’s excited hope makes me cry. Tanni had cooked me comfort food for lunch. Osso Buco with Milanese Risotto. When I got home late last night I found the very same recipe in Mum’s Italian cookbook.

When it comes to food, I am an exhibitionist and crazy to share recipes and of course, to taste!  Undoubtedly craving for sharp, spicy and adventorous delicacy. My tongue is one of those that although somewhat quite insensitive and more oftenly say ‘good’ to foods rather than resist them, I believe that I have tasted WAY better and more exquisite cuisines than most of the world’s population do— so thankful for that:D.

I feel like the title of this post should be Why I Love Summer Part II: The Upscale Version. Because this was just as fast and pantry friendly as the last dish. It features summer’s best friends: zucchini and basil–and adds tomatoes, which only improves a dish. Now it just so happens that shrimp and scallops are a (new to me) pantry item because I buy them individually frozen in 2 lbs bags at Costco.

A City of Los Angeles Historical Landmark, the San Antonio Winery was established in 1917. An area once known in the early 1900’s for its Italian-American community, it was just one of nearly a hundred make shift wineries located along the LA River basin, and is still family owned and operated to this day. Prohibition pretty much wiped out all the wineries. But the owners of San Antonio winery were granted a special permit to continue making sacramental wines, a practice they still continue today.

How vital are Menu Covers?goodcookingrecipe.com
07/27/2009
Opening a fine dining restaurant is not the only thing required for creating a mark in the dining world. To create a difference, one needs to have entire things in order. This includes the cutlery, napkins, table linen, décor, paints & even the menu covers . Yes, though it sounds strange, the menu covers also hold a lot of importance when it comes to creating an impression. Gone are the days, when all the restaurants use to have a similar looking menu cover.

After a few failed attempts to meet up with Kiwi photographer and fellow blogger, Di Mackey , we finally managed to hook up and spent a day wandering, and photographing, the delightful streets of the sleepy Italian town of Pavia. Actually, we spent more time chewing the cud than snapping away, but neither of us had any particular objectives, so we just walked, talked, and snapped at things which caught our eyes.  As with most Italian cities, there is plenty in Pavia to keep a keen photographer happy as Larry, and you will see one or two of the shots I took in this post.

If you were around eight thousand years ago and you ate hallucinogenic mushrooms, or ergot-infested barley, and didn’t know what the fuck was going on, you’d be looking to blame a God, or The Gods, for the glorious, mind-bogglingly twisted things you were seeing and hearing.Jesus, of course, was The Original Stoner.

We were quite pleased to have a place to buy wine pop up within a mile of our house . We were also happy to see a new shop actually open up in tiny downtown Hawthorne, where stuff had been closing pretty steadily since we moved in a few years ago–most notably the Italian restaurant Bel Paese across from the train station. The biggest local growth industry appears to be dance instructors and hair stylists; a new, seemingly untitled one opened in a Ryerlyn building a few months ago, and I just saw some inaugural bunting on one called Livia’s, just north of the train station.

On the balance, it’s been a mildly interesting TdF. The day-to-day racing wasn’t all that dramatic because one guy owned the bunch sprints, another guy owned the hills. Researchers concluded that levels of sexual desire were higher in women who were moderate drinkers of red wine than in their counterparts who preferred other alcoholic drinks, or were teetotal. One theory put forward by the team of Italian doctors who carried out the study is that chemical compounds found in red wine may improve sexual functioning by increasing blood flow to key areas of the body.(…) Read the rest of How red wine could have such effect to sex. © laimisk for Kllproject.en , 2009.

In the short 5 month life of GrubGrade , never has there been a post more talked about and popular than the Quiznos Toasty Torpedo .  A big reason would have to be the controversial “Scott and the Oven” commercials that were out there.  While getting mixed reviews on the Torpedo, one thing is for sure…it was on everyone’s mind this past Spring.  While the controversy may have died down, the Torpedo is still going strong and now has a pesky little brother coming into the picture to try to steal it’s thunder.

Well, two years into this marriage it finally happened. We finally got around to taking a honeymoon. We bantered on about a number of possible places to go, and ultimately settled on Italy. From the outset, this was due to be one of those trips that would always be remembered. Maybe not by me, but certainly by the local folk who would talk for generations about the fat man that came through and ate his way through the country.

by DIVINO PIAZZA Before there was New York, there was pizza. Before there was pizza, there was Italy. And before there was Italy, there was the piazza. Italian for “square,” an open area surrounded by buildings, piazze have been the nuclei of Italian culture for thousands of years. An Italian goes to the piazza for company, coffee, shopping, news, debate, food, religion, family: anything and everything. A piazza is a place where you can eat well, but also a place where the warmth of family and comradery is strongly felt.

Thankfully the recent expansion from 24 to 40 seats hasn’t detracted from the intimacy and quaintness of this downtown Italian restaurant and pizzeria.  It still has classy yet welcoming décor of deep cranberry and white walls, simple pine tables and cushioned chairs stained dark to enhance a bistro-like feeling, and not to be overshadowed, floor-length draperies well-matched to the magenta / wine tones.
