Let me preface this by stating at the outset that I think wine is all about fun. Having fun, enjoying oneself, bs-ing about wine, and yes, as my father has often said, wine is 90% BS! But I digress. In the spirit of having fun I am announcing the first Snooth Blind Tasting Challenge! How it will work – We’ll have 4 flights of three wines each, our usual blind tasting format, and we will invite bloggers and enthusiasts to join us here at the Snooth conference room in New York City.

Buying anything via the internet has always been met with skepticism by many people.  The mere idea of putting a credit card number into a computer is not something contemplated.  Transactions by the millions are now being processed via the internet thanks to the added improvement in security over the years. Wine being sold over the internet has been met with some reluctance over the years as well.  That perception is slowly changing because people are finding that the wine they are purchasing is mostly of top quality.

I’ll be tasting a range of wines under $A20 (retail) in the near future. Yes, the bank balance is looking iffy, so what better excuse to explore the value end of the market. Again. Thick, syrupy aromas of lychees and white flowers. I struggle a bit with Gewürztraminer in terms of how it’s usually described. Lychee and rose petals I get, but these tend to be so obvious and dominant that I struggle to discern much else. In the case of this wine, there’s perhaps a touch of ginger cake baking in the oven, but more a suggestion than anything else.

This Pinot Gris from Washington’s Columbia Valley appellation, is a really great example of the varietal, and has me excited about the kind of quality Pinot Gris that can be produced in Washington. It reminds me a lot of the Oregon style Gris with it’s weighty texture and mouth filling fruit flavors. On the nose I get aromas of honeydew melon, pear, grapefruit, kiwi, and lots of mixed citrus fruits. Those citrus notes translate onto the palate where I get flavors of tangerine, grapefruit, and some really nice honeysuckle.

Drops of dark chocolate with increasingly rich cocoa intensities are packaged in six signature Wine Country tins; each 3.5 oz. tin is also labeled with the wine varietal to which that specific chocolate is ideally matched. At the light end of the spectrum are drops comprised of 54% cocoa solids and paired with Port wine.
