Eek! A nude on a wine label!onlinelunchpail.blogspot.com

Aren’t there more important things to worry about than this? America’s health care system is broken, wages have stagnated for 28 years, and our education system is a memory. But Alabama officials are worried about a wine label because it shows (gasp!) a painting of a side view of a nude nymph astride a bicycle . This vintage painting is from 1895, and this brand of wine has generated no complaints about its label in the 49 other states, the District of Columbia, or the 20 or so other countries where this wine is sold.

During the years I worked in Germany, I often found myself changing trains with little or no time to grab a coffee, a sandwich, or a drink at the convenience food stands in the larger train stations. (Mostly, that was not a bad thing ; Bahnhof  cafes generally do not serve very good food or drink.) Many stations, mostly in smaller towns, placed vending machines near the tracks, so we passengers could step from the train, hurry across the platform, and for a few Deutschmarks get a sandwich, a soft drink, or a beer.

Dive Team finds 200 Year Old Port wineinsideportugaltravel.com

A team of professional deep sea divers have found rich catch, more than 1,000 sealed bottle of Port wine from two centuries ago. The Hungarian firm Octopus located on the floor of the Atlantic the lot of sealed bottles amid pottery from the early 19th century  off the coast of  Pernambuco, in northeastern Brazil. The area is littered with some 22 wreaks. One of the wreaks has been loaded with Portuguese products. The ship also had lots of decorative tiles and building products as well as supplies.

Image via Wikipedia It happened again. I saw my words on another blogger’s blog. For half an instant, before I could catch myself, my face twisted into a bitter scowl and an actual “Ugh!” escaped my lips. This is the first time I’ve actually heard one, having previously thought words like “Ugh!” only existed on paper! In that very same half an instant (granted, it was a long half an instant), I thought to myself how these Heather word/idea sightings always meet certain conditions: The blogger is well-established with a much bitter (whoops) bigger “following”than me.

EDMONTON – Alberta is to announce new rules on when police can use conducted energy weapons such as Tasers. Solicitor General Department spokeswoman Michelle Davio says the changes will include setting up tighter boundaries on when Tasers can be used and the need for ongoing testing of the weapons – which deliver an intense electric shock. Davio says the changes expected to be announced later this week by Solicitor General Fred Lindsay will apply to all police in the province, including RCMP.

Wine, re-purposing, and attractive storage solutions — these are a few of our favorite things. Perhaps that’s why we’ve featured the wine crate on so many occasions. As a flea market staple and a liquor store freebie, they’re easy to come by and even easier to put to good (re)use. Check out our top re-purposings… • We love the juxtaposition of cleanly applied paper and recycled wooden wine crates in these fabulous display cases by Design*Sponge’s DIY masters, Derek and Lauren.

Whew, what a weekend. There’s enough to say that I’ll break this up into two installments– Saturday and Sunday. SATURDAY It all began with the farmer’s market. My mother and I make a concerted effort to stop at the Farmer’s Market at the Embarcadero every Saturday that we come to SF, so of course we stopped by to get some fresh produce treats. I bought a bunch of multicolored carrots (though they weren’t as good as last year’s, they were delicious enough that I ate almost the entire bunch before we left the market) and then discovered that CUESA was sponsoring a berry tasting.

The wine label above is too racy for Alabama. AP reports that Alabama’s liquor control agency has ordered restaurants and stores not to sell the wine: A wine label showing a nude nymph is too racy for Alabama’s liquor control agency, which has told restaurants and stores not to sell the product. The label on Cycles Gladiator wine, produced by Hahn Family Wines in Soledad, Calif., shows a vintage 1895 bicycle advertising poster with a nude nymph flying beside a winged bicycle.

Recently, I’ve bought a couple beers that explicitly told me not to cellar them.  Pliny the Elder from Russian River and 13th Anniversary Ale from Stone are the two that I’m thinking of specifically.  On the bottle, they make it seem shameful that one even has the idea to cellar their products. What do these beers have in common?  I believe that the hop factor is the real answer.  It is semi-understandable that they want their product to have the fresh hoppiness that they intended when making it.

Alabama’s liquor control agency has banned Cycles Gladiator Wine because its label protrays a nekkid woman riding (flying?) a bicycle.  The image is from a vintage 1895 cycling poster and has been sold nationwide for years without issue.  Now, however, Alabama’s ABC Board has sent a letter to all stores and restaurants telling them not [...]

There’s a reason Niagara Falls is one of the most spectacular natural sights in the world: Approximately 150,000 cubic feet of water per second rush over the edge and drop 170 feet to the rocks below. And that’s just on the American side of the falls. Explore this natural wonder for less, taking an in-depth tour of the falls, staying at an English-style inn, and indulging in the local gourmet fast food. Play Cave of the Winds : Rain slickers are included in the admission fee of this “must-do” Niagara Falls tour, and on the “hurricane deck” you’ll understand why.

I’m really not trying to pose as a seasoned veteran of the nonprofit sector when I say this, but I’ve noticed that I’m less inclined to try to change systems now than I was when I started. It’s on all levels, from seeing if we can get a more efficient volunteer timesheet system to sinking a couple of hours into managing my contacts more effectively to seeking additional programming for my students to sending emails to my representatives regarding Adult Basic Education.  I would have been all over all of those things three years ago, but right now they’re on the back burner.

Phew! We’re back from our 17-day whirlwind adventure through Paris and Greece. (I apologize for our stealthy departure–it didn’t seem wise to broadcast to the wide, wide world that our house would be empty and vulnerable and awaiting any wannabe burglars for two solid weeks!) We took an evening flight on Air France (which, by the way, happens to be my new favorite airline for international travel–I love on-demand movies!). I watched The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and I Love You, Man .

Since I enjoyed the Les Laurentides so much, I thought I might as well try and find a bottle of La Sagasse. I knew I had a couple of bottles, but it took a little bit of digging to find one. One of these days I will get my wine life organized. As I have written before, Domaine Gramenon is one of the most respected producers in the Rhône. In his book on the wines of the Rhône valley, Robert Parker classified Gramenon in the same category as Beaucastel and Fonsalette.
