A colleague let me know about some upcoming events taking place at Ashdown Forest in the South East. I’ve never actually been there before, but I had a little snoop around and have to say that the fortnight of activities looks like a lot of fun! From the start of August, a host of events will be taking place at the public park – which spans an enormous 6,500 of open space. Those of you with good memories may know it as the setting of the Winnie the Pooh stories, making it the ideal outdoor spot for families or anyone feeling a little nostalgic for their own youth.

by Betsy Hoppenhager Back to school is just around the corner so where do you actually buy a laptop for your kids? I know they were whine (wine?) and dine you and tell you where to get the best laptop for them but you’ve got to ask, where’s the best deal? One of the best places to get a laptop is actually Best Buy. Why? They have stores all over the country, meaning that your kids can go talk to someone (and/or return merchandise) in any of the stores nationwide.

by David Phillips As a visitor to the island you can be confident of a good choice of Anglesey hotels to make your stay a memorable one. Equally, you can expect a high standard of accommodation if you are staying overnight before catching the Dublin ferry from Holyhead. Your holiday activity and its location may influence where you may want to be based during your stay. Some people like the restfulness of the countryside while others prefer to be close to the coast and beaches for watersports.

There’s a very simple answer to this, and it took sitting with Delfim Costa of Enoforum Wines to have it explained to me. In other places around the world, the cost of labor and goods isn’t anywhere near what it is in the US. As a result, great wines of regionality and careful crafting can be purchased for a fraction of the cost of an American wine. I was reminded of this as I just heard a story on the news about a car manufacturing plant that may soon shut down in California.

Red wine supplements are available everywhere. They have started showing up in stores now all over the country and this has many people convinced. You see when the initial studies about this stuff came out, the only place to really find the substance was on the internet. Many people became skeptical immediately and this brought on a lot of controversy about the supplement. Now that more and more people are seeing the stuff in stores, it’s being given a new light and better trust.

I assume you agree that summer is a terrible bore. The hot weather. The barbecues. The boat trips. The jumps off sun-warmed canyon cliffs into icy waters. The fruity drinks on balmy decks. The velvety boom of fireworks over gently lapping waves. Does all this indolence and relaxation make you yawn? Why, just the other day I heard about a tedious afternoon my hairdresser spent, when she and her gal-pals headed out to a local lake equipped with music and a cooler full of cold drinks and snacks.

Former Met director Philippe de Montebello has given a talk in which he speaks about the issues of restitution affecting museums. Based on previous comments , it is unsurprising that he is against the idea of restitution. What is puzzling is that even after the return of the Euphronios Krater from his own museum he still doesn’t seem to understand the problem – he sees it as something that should only ever be dealt with when legal reasons dictate that an artefacts should be returned & never for a philosophical / ethical reason.

by: Jane Wilkinson The city of Athens takes it name from Athena, the Greek Goddess of wisdom and knowledge. It seems only fitting then that is also the city that created democracy and where the great thinkers Plato and Aristotle were born. Ancient Greece’s best known temple ‘The Acropolis’ is definitely for many people one of the highlights of their holidays in Greece. The Acropolis contains several temples and the most important of these is the Parthenon, which is dedicated to the Goddess Athena.

I became single for the second time at the age of forty, which I also referred to as “feckin forty” quite a lot. The first period of singledom ended when I was nineteen. I can truly say that being single never bothered me for the first 19 years, they were a doddle, I am just wondering if the second period of singledom will be as long and as carefree.

Is it possible to fall in love with a character in a book? How about with a goddess? The Odyssey has been playing on my mind of late. i was listening to a friend’s lecture on the poem – he argues that the Homeric gods inhabit a flattened, frivolous world, compared to the mortal Odysseus; the gods fall in love, certainly, but very little is serious for them, because they cannot die. It is otherwise with a mortal. Odysseus makes his entry in Book V, the prisoner of Calypso; and his adventures begin as he rejects the immortality she offers, that ultimately unserious world.

The appeal to medieval cities stems from the idea that at one time, advances were made and then suddenly time stood still.  Very rarely do you find a small town where buildings are five or six hundred years old and then suddenly buildings from the 70’s or 80’s appear. Thus is the story of Monterchi, Italy.  This completely medieval town probably sprang up because it was the half-way point between two major cities.  What remains of the cobble stone streets shows hundreds of years worth of foot, horse, donkey and cart traffic.  It is an odd sensation, touching stones that have been worn smooth with the passage of time.

And when it comes to the most admired technology executive, Steve Jobs far outshines even the great Eric Schmidt. So why isn’t anyone asking “What would Steve do?” Perhaps it’s because the answer to that question flies in the face of everything we’ve held sacred over the last five years.

Whether we are talking about the evolution of finches  in the Galápagos Islands  or the evolution of the software projects that we work on, my sense is that diversity offers its greatest benefit during  a crisis. The worst thing about monoculture is the powerful reward it offers to those pathogens that are adapted to that culture . Or, as Wikipedia says: The dependence on monoculture crops can lead to large scale failures when the single genetic variant or cultivar becomes susceptible to a pathogen or when a change in weather patterns occur.

Dr Albert Schweitzer wrote ‘In Quest of the Historical Jesus’ and that started a theological fashion – trying to find out what the real Jesus would have been like. 1 The search continues. Theologians, writers, film-makers and television commentators have all made their way to Palestine, to walk in the steps of the Galilean and try and reconstruct his life, death and resurrection.

Personal beliefs from a spiritual agnostic on a summer Sunday afternoon. 1. Fear is supposed to be scary. Frightening situations are gifts, exactly as valuable as the degree they frighten you. Each is an opportunity to experience liberation, act on faith, release the pretense of control, and find joy. In fact it is that helpless sense of joy that comes after unexpected destruction of something we loved that is often as close as any of us come to nirvana.

From memory: Earlier this week, Hillary Clinton followed up her smashing success in India with a visit to ASEAN where she indulged in a little Burma-bashing, with a smidge of NorK name-calling . You know it’s bad when the mainstream press starts to call this the “Blunderpalooza Tour,” a term usually reservered for any foray the Vice President makes outside of his now-disclosed armored locker behind the wine racks in the cellar of the Naval Observatory.

Planning A Gay Vacation to South Africa by Howie HolbenSouth Africa has had a tumultuous human rights history, but even before reversing course with the elimination of apartheid, penning the worlds first constitution to ban discrimination based on sexual orientation and being among the first nations to legalize same-sex marriage, South Africa was a popular gay travel destination. Since these history-making events, South Africa has become even more popular with both straight and gay travelers.

by Howie Holben South Africa was a gay travel destination long before it became the first country in the world with a constitution outlawing discrimination based on sexual orientation and the fifth country to legalize same-sex marriage. With the fall of apartheid and these two historic gay rights events, the allure of South Africa has increased substantially among both straight and gay travelers. A Gin-u-wine Texan’s Map of the U.S.A. (No Bull) “ Howdy from Texas (Tejas): This ain’t no bull. We ain’t never heard of Alasky. We’ve always been the biggest. Why, Brewster County in Texas is bigger than the whole state of Rhode Island. YA’LL COME (EVER CHANCE YE GIT).” This unused postcard came to me from the collection of a young man called Wart, who travelled the country in 1981, mostly by bus.  He sent a lot of cards back home to his parents in Stone Mountain , Georgia, writing of his travels (mostly location updates), but he also seems to have hand-carried back a lot of unused ones, too.

Economic growth was recorded in Portugal during the period 1990 – 2000. It has become progressively more service based economy. In the year 1986, Portugal was accepted in the European Union. It is a high income country and follows its own capitalist kind of economic structure. In 1998, Portugal qualified for the Economic and the Monetary Union of the European Union. Over the last 20 years, consecutive governments have taken steps in order to privatize many of the state controlled companies and worked more towards liberalizing the economy.

I was a small child. Meaning, I was not the star-athlete, although I did once receive a trophy for being the best second baseman on our little league team. I was intelligent, but not super-intelligent. I thought I was funny, but most of my friends joked that they only laughed at me because I was so hiliariously not funny.  I was not handsome and I was not wealthy. Which left one avenue for success: Music.Music was in mygenes. My uncles have played in bands their whole lives.
