The Prime Minister of Cambodia is telling his people that they should be eating pork and to us this might sound very strange altogether. The fact that the number of people in the country eating pork has dramatically dropped is what led to this request from Hun Sen. Khmer people have no moral objection to eating the meat; in fact up until recently it was widely used and is part of many national dishes. The current problems with pork are to do with fear concerning ‘blue ear pig disease’.

Blue ear pig disease has been the source of epidemics across Asia since it was first discovered back in 1991. This year has been particularly bad for the people of Cambodia as the country seems to have been hit hard by it. Many herds of pigs have been destroyed by this arterivirus as it attacks their lungs and then spreads beyond control. There have been many claims that this disease is unlikely to cross over the humans but it is understandable that people are concerned. It is this fear that is turning people off eating pork in places like Cambodia. In Vietnam there have also been many cases reported and the problem seems to be escalating at the moment; 50,000 pigs have died there already because of it.

But despite this, the Cambodian Prime Minister is urging the people in his country to re-introduce pork into their diet. He has stated that there is no need for concern provided that the meat has been cooked properly. Recently the government has banned the import of pigs into the country until they are sure they have got the problem under control. Cambodia is very reliant on neighbouring countries for supplying pork so it will probably be a while before things return to normal.

When it comes to people’s favourite food, one thing that is always near the top of the list is pork. The popularity of this meat amongst people has meant that demand is always high for things such as pork recipes.
