The grapes were picked for the most part by men, though some growers also employed women. They worked throughout the day, cutting the bunches from the vines with clasp knives and filling wooden carriers (tinetas) or cane baskets (canastas) that held about thirty pounds of fruit. These were fitted with shoulder straps, but when they were full, the harvesters carried them on their heads, which somehow looked “muy tipico.” Labor, though, was increasingly expensive and hard to get.

Everyone that works a full day and then has to come home to entertain needs inspiration every now and again. Even though Sichuan food ( as most Chinese food)  requires a well stocked larder, it is without doubt, one of the best ways to add zing to a week.  The cooking itself is relatively simple and isn’t time consuming but is always, always exciting.
