What would be an appropriate gift for my Spanish homestay hostess?

I 'm going to live with a middle-aged woman in Spain? For a few months starting in a week or so ym? pens? that be? a nice gesture to bring a gift. Thought that a bottle of wine could be a good idea, because it is simple? Anyone have experience with a situation like this? Please thoughtful answers only. Thanks in advance!

i would suggest things from here in the CHI . to show her how we do it here . dont bring anything touristy. bring maybe photos of ure family and frriends . sometthing personal. so her and her family will know wat life is like for u here just like they will show u how it is there. i havent been in the situation yet. just some suggestions. im also from chicago , been to spain twice , plan on going again at the end of the yr , and living here after college . hope i was helpful and have fun . also type your question in on here. i know for a fact someone else had a similiar question. it may be helpful to see wat they brought.

I agree, some “touristy Trinket” from Chicago…something mass produced in China, would be too tacky.

Wine is a nice idea. Or foodstuffs that are difficult to come by. Honestly, if anyone were ever coming to stay with me from Spain, I’d just DIE for a hunk of ham!

Problem is, there isn’t all that much that can’t be gotten online or in Corte Inglés.

What I always suggest is something hand made…you know, those shops that sell people’s handmade crafts. Those are unique and different. Something that is locally made, maybe represents the local community. OR (and you can combine this) bring a photo frame, and while you are there, take a photo of you two, or of you with her family, and put it into the frame…then present that to her…it could even be something hand made locally.

Someone else posted that idea some time back…I really like it. Take the photo with a background that screams where you are…like if you are in Madrid…at the Plaza Mayor, or in front of the Palacio Real…something like that.

Middle aged women generally love stuff like that.

I went to England to stay with my “pen pals” family and bascily… everything that was though of through-out Spain of Navarra, my region I took. Like some wine, cheeses, some presatives and sweets. I also took a Basque flag

… Wine is very cheap here, so inless you buy her wine from Chicago or something… then I would say something that is in the tourist industry that make’s other Americans think of Chicago =) As long as your polite also during your stay you’ll both get along have a good time

When I think of Chicago I think of the Musical… then a Big American city… I’ve never been =P

Well, I brought food for my senora–and on second thought I should have brought a nice scented candle or something!

Spanish women watch their weight quite vigorously.
