Columbia Crest (Columbia Valley, Washington) makes an oustanding Merlot and Cabernet-Merlot all under $10 and rated 88+. Outstanding wine for the price but most importantly for the taste!!!

My favorite is the Two Vines Merlot 2002 – 88 WS

Such a tough question as there are varitals in all regions that are awesome.
Best Merlot – Napa valley, I like Sterling, they are the inventor of making Merlot as a stand alone wine. Personally, I would stay away from Merlot, get something a little different that has more flavor. I would choose Cab franc or sangiovese.
Best Pinot – Willamette Valley, The best in the world! I am partial to Eyrie Vineyards.
Zin – Not the biggest fan of zinfandel – Sonoma County vineyards are good though.
What about a Cabernet Sauvignon? Love Mondavi, love Stags leap or anything in that region.

    cheers

For Pinot Noir, check out English Estate Winery in Clark County, Washington. Very limited distribution I believe. Available on the web at.
